The city of Flint was best known for automotive manufacturing. However, within the last six years, the city has become infamous for implementing public policies without the regards of the health impact to its citizens. On April 25, 2014 Flint changed their city water from the Detroit River to the Flint River in order to reduce cost. Today, Flint is best known as the city who poisoned its residents through an unsafe drinking water supply.
The accessibility to clean water is a basic need every American should have access to. Most people do not believe clean drinking water is still unattainable in modern America. Flint officials are now trying to find a solution.
This website is a demonstration of what plans Flint is incorporating to take a just sustainability approach in order to prevent this mistake from happening to neighboring communities. Using Julian Agyeman “just sustainability” approach, Flint officials are trying to reverse what they took away from their people. This switch of water system resulted in permanent damage and will continue to affect their community for years to come. Today, the city is moving forward to make a safer community.
The areas that I will be focusing on in this webpage are the beginning of the crisis and what government officials did in preparation to the water main switch. A key topic is what this water switch did to the overall health of the community. I will also discuss the solutions Flint has put together to protect its people since the crisis began and how these solutions influenced public health. Another topic I included is how Flint is creating a sustainable environment according to Julian Agyeman’s argument and what does this look like for Flint.
